Back Injuries and Back Injury Attorney Information and Resources

Have you or a loved one suffered a back injury or spinal cord injury? Back injuries can occur in a variety of ways:

* Work-related accidents

* Slip and fall accidents

* Car Accidents

* Motorcycle, Quad, Motorboat, Bicycle or other kind of vehicle accidents

* Diving and Swimming Accidents

Sometimes back injuries come on suddenly, like from an unforeseen and unavoidable car accident, falling off of a ladder or lifting something too heavy. Other times the pain can develop much more slowly, and years after the actual injury itself, like work-related lifting injuries or a slip and fall accident.

The injury itself can range from a dull ache to deep, sharp and horrible pain that can leave you incapacitated. Worse yet can be spinal cord injuries, as they can result in paralysis, even death.

Back-related pain and injuries are one of the most common medical issues our society faces. In fact, at some point in their lives, the majority of adults will experience some form of back pain.

Back pain can cause not only physical pain, but also cost you dearly in medical expenses, lost time at work, limit your physical abilities that you once enjoyed, even cause emotional and psychological pain and suffering.

If you, or a loved one, have suffered an injury that is causing back pain, or you believe could have caused a back or spinal injury that has not yet surfaced, you should first see a doctor. You should obtain a diagnoiss and know what pain relief and treatment regimen your doctor recommends. You may undergo a variety of tests including Xrays, MRIs, CTs, and simple range of motion type tests.

Acute back pain is typically treated with ibuprofen, aspirin and typcially gets better on its own. You may be limited in what you can do, possibly restricted from certain activities, but typically you can return to work and go about your normal life. Do not self-medicate or self-diagnose even acute back pain. You want to make sure that you follow your doctors’ orders to relief the pain and hopefully fully recover from your injury.

Chronic back pain, however, can require much more treatment. You may be able to relieve your pain with hot and cold type therapies, various physical therapies, stretches, prescription medicine, over the counter medicines and ointments, even acupuncture, chiropractic and massage therapies.

Chronic back pain may require far more invasion treatments including operations for herniated discs, fractures, and other more serious back injuries. These can cause you to incur large medical costs, lose work, cause you to endure long recovery and more. Chronic back pain can cause a great deal of suffering, and can be difficult for loved ones as well.

If the injury occurred at work, document it immediately with your supervisor or HR representative. Whether it happened today, yesterday, weeks or months ago, you should ensure that you report the accident and injury and start the documentation trail with your employer. You may be eligible for Workman’s Compensation benefits. You also owe it to your employer to report any unsafe working conditions or issues to protect your fellow employees.

The bottom line?

* Seek immediate medical care. Back injuries are treatable and you can sometimes find immediate relief if you seek medical attention. You also want to ensure that you have any injury fully documented by a doctor should you also need to seek legal assistance.

* Do not try to self-diagnose, self-treat or self-medicate any back injuries. You could actually worsen the injury and cause more pain and suffering. Many people may assume that the injury was "their fault" and just deal with the pain on their own. You are not alone, there are resources to assist you and help you heal and recover.

* Report any injury immediately to your employer. If you are injured while shopping or at another location, report the injury to a manager or whoever is "in charge". If you are injured in a car accident, motorcycle, boat or other kind of vehicle accident, make sure that authorities are contacted to ensure that the accident is thoroughly and properly documented.

* Contact an attorney if you have any questions about your legal rights and need for legal representation. You may have the ability to have medical bills paid, other costs reimbursed, even a settlement for long term care and rehabilitation. You have rights, and an attorney will ensure that your rights are protected and represented accordingly.
